ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to assess the role of the local government in national development. Specifically, the study sought to examine the extent to which the local government councils in Anambra State promote the course of national development and how the local government councils in Anambra State can aid the course of national development. The study adopted the survey research approach. The findings from the study reveals that local governments serve as Instrument for rural transformation, Agencies for rural governance, Cultural custodian and Agent for conflict resolution. The study recommends that for the local government to function within this limits a constitutional amendment must be made to cede the local government away as an appendage of the state government.
